Patrick Mahomes made magic happen despite his teammates not knowing what play to run

"But try to understand, try to understand. Try, try, try to understand, I'm a magic man."

The band "Heart" made that chorus famous in the mid-1970s — 20 years before Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was born.

You can't convince me, however, that it wasn't written by a prognosticator who knew Mahomes would one day dominate the NFL.

Because there isn't a better way to describe Mahomes — he's truly a magic man.

And we saw that on full display in Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In the fourth quarter, with the Chiefs clinging to a one-point lead, Mahomes threw a four-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Skyy Moore.

The touchdown didn't look like anything special. Moore ran to the flat, was open, and easily scored.

A behind-the-scenes look at the play, however, reveals that Kansas City's players didn't even line up the right way.

Mahomes called out that Phiily was in Cover Zero and then tried to send a receiver in motion. That's when he noticed that players weren't where they were supposed to be.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid noticed the same thing and tried to call timeout, but it was too late.

Mahomes just rolled with it and ended up throwing the touchdown.

You can see in the clip below that Mahomes looks confused when he calls for motion and players aren't where they're supposed to be.

After the play, Mahomes said on the sideline that he noticed the formation was wrong and then he said "F— it, I don't know" and just ran the play!

Mahomes also noted that he called the play right, the other guys just lined up wrong.

Most quarterbacks would've panicked and called timeout in that situation.

Mahomes, however, isn't most quarterbacks. He still knew he could exploit the Eagles' Cover Zero look — and he did.

I know Tom Brady has seven Super Bowl rings. And I know other quarterbacks in NFL history have more accolades. But I'm not sure we've ever seen someone like Mahomes. He's completely revolutionized the way the quarterback position is played. And he's just getting better.
