The Tennessee Vols have some added competition for one of their top 2024 recruiting targets.
Five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo is a player the Vols badly want to add to their 2024 recruiting class.
Wingo, 6-foot-2/205 lbs from Saint Louis, MO, is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 7 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 2 player in the state of Missouri.
The Missouri native took an official visit to Texas this past weekend that reportedly went extremely well.
“That for sure could be a place I would go,” said Wingo to On3 after his visit to Austin. “I think I feel comfortable there. I was able to see the campus more and talk with the players. The players, they won’t lie to you because they were just in my shoes six or seven months ago or two or three years ago. They obviously will tell me the real things about the school, so I think I could see myself there.”
Inside Texas reported on Sunday that Texas feels like they have a "legit shot" to land Wingo.
Part of the Longhorns' recruiting pitch for Wingo included dinner with true freshman quarterback Arch Manning.
Manning, thanks to his name and high recruiting ranking, is already one of the biggest names in college football despite the fact that he's yet to take a snap in a game. It's no surprise that Texas is using Manning to try to help land Wingo.
Tennessee, however, also has recruits/players trying to bring to Wingo to Knoxville.
Recent Vols commit Boo Carter, for example, sent a message to Wingo after committing to Tennessee this past weekend.
Wingo is a player that 247Sports describes as a future first round pick who is a "scoreboard changer at the next level no matter how he touches the ball".
In other words, he'd be a perfect fit in Tennessee's high scoring offense and he'd instantly be a threat to win a Biletnikoff Award for the Vols.
There's still a long way to go in the battle for Wingo. And while the Vols are right in the thick of his recruitment, it sounds like they have plenty of competition for the coveted recruit.
