Florida Atlantic head coach Dusty May created some waves this week with his comments about "Australian rugby" ahead of his team's matchup with the Tennessee Vols in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night.

Tennessee has earned the reputation of being the most physical team in the NCAA Tournament after the way they played against Duke in the second round last weekend.

The Vols physically dominated Duke in every aspect of the game, leading some national media members to suggest that Tennessee was too physical against the Blue Devils.

While discussing the matchup with Tennessee, May said he was going to read up on Australian rugby rules in preparation.

On Wednesday, May clarified his comments.

May, a former assistant coach for the Florida Gators, told reporters that his comments were meant as a compliment.

I'll take May's word for it — he was probably just trying to make a joke and it came off the wrong way.

But I don't believe for a second that he didn't see the Tennessee vs Duke game as he says in the above clip. FAU didn't play until Sunday — why should we think May wasn't checking out the game between the opponents that could await FAU in the Sweet 16?

Even if he didn't watch it live, he's certainly watched the film of the game by now. If he hasn't, then that's great news for the Vols (but I seriously doubt that's the case).

Tennessee and FAU tip off at 9:00 PM ET on Thursday night on TBS.
