A former Tennessee Vols standout was selected in the USFL draft this week.

Jerome Carvin, an offensive lineman for the Vols from 2018 to 2022, was selected by the Memphis Showboats with the No. 43 overall pick in the 2023 USFL Draft.

Carvin, who was born in Guam and later moved to Louisiana, grew up in Memphis after moving there at the age of four.

I'm sure Carvin was happy to get drafted by his hometown team, but his goal is still the NFL. And being selected in the USFL draft doesn't change that goal.

Carvin should be selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. Several mock drafts have Carvin going in the sixth or the seventh round, which would be a massive steal for whichever team drafts him.

The former Vol started 26 games over the last two seasons for the Vols and allowed only one sack.

Most of those starts came at left guard, but he's also spent some time at right guard and center.

Landing an offensive lineman late in the draft with that much SEC starting experience and success, who also has positional versatility, is a dream for an NFL team. This could be another Trey Smith situation where Carvin is drafted late and ends up being a key starter for an NFL team in a year or two.

I'd be surprised if Carvin ever plays a down in the USFL. He has too much to offer an NFL franchise.
