In a bit of a stunner, the Tennessee Titans are releasing wide receiver Julio Jones less than a year after trading for the former Alabama wide receiver.
Jones had a disappointing season with the Titans in 2021, catching only 31 passes for 434 yards in 10 games.
Tennessee is obviously making the move to save some cash.
By releasing Jones, and designating him as a post-June 1 cut, the Titans will save $9.5 million in cap space for 2022, due to only $2 million of Jones' salary being guaranteed. Those cap savings won't be available until after June 1 (Jones will have a dead cap hit of $4.8 million in 2022 and a dead cap hit of $8.4 million in 2023).
It's unclear what the Titans are making room for — and they won't be able to use the savings until after June — but it's safe to say we're going to see another wide receiver lining up across the field from AJ Brown in 2022.
