Carson Wentz is officially no longer the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. After many rumors and discussions about disparity between him and the front office, they have found a way to move on. They decided it was time to move on from Wentz after just one season. He is now the QB for the Washington Commanders. How does this move affect the Tennessee Titans and the landscape of the AFC, though?
The Deal
Firstly, let's take a look at the details of the deal. The Colts seemingly got pretty good compensation for a middling QB with a difficult contract situation.
The return for Indianapolis adds to their ammunition to possibly trade up in this year's draft to select a replacement for Wentz at QB. Additionally, the Commanders are taking the entirety of his contract, saving the Colts from having any dead money left over from it if they had decided to cut him. That may be the biggest domino of the deal as Indianapolis now has over 70 million dollars to spend in free agency. That is the most of any team in the NFL.
Affecting the Titans
As for the Titans, a cloudy AFC South just gets cloudier after this deal. We all know that neither Houston or Jacksonville will most likely challenge Tennessee too much for the division crown this year. The Colts were easily the biggest foe in their way to another AFC South title. Now, they have no reliable QB option on the roster. There are reports that they may look at 49ers' QB Jimmy Garoppolo as a Wentz replacement. Is that an upgrade? That's not a certainty. It's a change in style, for sure, at the very least.
There aren't many QBs left on the market after the Russell Wilson trade and Aaron Rodgers' decision yesterday. The Colts could look at Derek Carr, but Las Vegas does not seem to be looking to trade him right now. Other options are free agents Mitchell Trubisky or Jameis Winston, but those could be volatile choices as well. At the very least, it seems as though the Titans' QB situation could end up looking better than the Colts' by the start of the season.
