The COVID-19 count for Tennessee Titans players and coaches has reached nine, according to Adam Schefter. Seven of those nine are players and are now on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Last Sunday, Head Coach Mike Vrabel was the first domino to fall, announcing that he had tested positive for coronavirus. Other positive tests around the team have continued to pile up in the week since then.
There's an interesting piece of this "outbreak", though. The timing. No, I am not referring to any sort of foul play or hypothetical. That's nonsense.
Rather, roster cuts before the start of the regular season are approaching quickly. Additions to the reserve/COVID-19 list seemingly create a bit of short-term safety for guys that are on the roster bubble.
How exactly does that work? How could that help the Titans make tough decisions? Check this out.
As you heard, it's an intriguing position that the Titans front office and coaching staff is in right now. The solidified roster locks that are on the list could help the team stash other players using their roster spots. The first wave of roster cuts can be dangerous for teams that lack depth at certain positions, so any relief could help protect important players that don't start.
Of course, health is still at the forefront as per usual, but the proposition is something to consider as the start of the season looms.
