NASHVILLE — When quarterback Josh Dobbs landed in Nashville seventeen days ago, he became the closest thing the Tennessee Titans (7-9) had to an insurance policy. That's all the time it took for him to show that he deserves to be Tennessee's starter for the rest of the season.
It was not enough to avoid the Titans sixth consecutive loss.
Thursday night at Nissan Stadium felt different, despite another disappointing result. Dobbs was far from perfect in the 27-13 loss to the Dallas Cowboys (12-4). He was, however, able to give a team that has not been competitive for over a month a legitimate pulse.
Dobbs more than earned the chance to lead this team into a pivotal season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8).
Dobss will have a better team around him against the Jags
That there were even competitive moments from the roster Tennessee fielded against Dallas is fairly shocking.
Inactives against the Cowboys included running back Derrick Henry, defensive backs Kristian Fulton, Josh Thompson and Amani Hooker, linebacker Dylan Cole, right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and defensive linemen Denico Autry and Jeffery Simmons. The majority of that list will be expected back for the Titans in Week 18. Starter Ryan Tannehill will be unavailable in Jacksonville after the team placed him, edge rusher Bud Dupree and linebacker Zach Cunningham on season-ending Injured Reserve on Thursday.
"That's up to the coaches," said Dobbs when asked if he expected to start against the Jaguars. "I think they're going to put whoever gives us the best opportunity to win out there. I respect their decision. So, we'll see when we regroup over the weekend and go from there."
The outing against the Cowboys was all it took for coach Mike Vrabel to make his decision.
There was no question that Tennessee needed to put the Vols legend back under center for Titans final playoff push. Dobbs will start against the Jaguars tonight, with an entire fanbases postseason aspirations on his shoulders.
