Josh Heupel was asked a really tough question last month at SEC Media Days in Nashville about two games that Tennessee Vols fans will always remember — albeit for very different reasons.

Heupel was interviewed by Outkick.com and he was asked if he thinks more about the Vols' win against the Alabama Crimson Tide or UT's loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Tennessee's 52-49 win against Alabama was easily the most memorable moment of the Vols' 2022 season, while the 63-38 loss to South Carolina was certainly the lowest point of the season for UT.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Heupel, who in an industry fool of competitive folks is known as a hyper-competitive person, said that he thinks more about the loss to South Carolina.

"Definitely the South Carolina loss," responded Heupel, who appeared to still be visibly irked by the loss to the Gamecocks. "I think that's part of being a competitor…but a lot of great moments from last year and a lot of things we've got to continue to improve upon. We gotta keep pushing."

The loss to South Carolina was one of the most devastating in program history as it likely kept the Vols out of the College Football Playoff.

But if there's a silver lining to the loss it's that Tennessee won't be making some of the same mistakes in 2023 — such as becoming complacent before the South Carolina game — that they made in 2022. The Vols will keep that edge all season with the memory of last year's loss to South Carolina still fresh.
