The latest 2024 MLB Draft news/prediction will likely have Tennessee Vols baseball fans feeling down.

MLB Pipeline released their early list of next year's top 10 draft prospects and a familiar name tops the list.

Former Tennessee right handed pitcher Chase Burns is listed as the top draft prospect for the 2024 MLB Draft.

Burns transferred to Wake Forest last week after becoming a bit of a national sensation during the Super Regional against Southern Mississippi.

Losing Burns to Wake Forest is certainly a big blow for the Vols. Burns struggled early last season, but he found his groove once he was moved to the bullpen. He's poised to be one of the top players in the nation next season.

Moving Burns to the bullpen likely saved Tennessee's 2023 season. But it also essentially guaranteed that Burns wouldn't be returning to Rocky Top in 2024.

The talented pitcher wants to be a top draft pick and he knows he has to be starter for that to happen. While it's ultimately Burns' performance that will dictate whether or not he's a top draft prospect, it seems apparent that he felt like a guaranteed spot in the rotation wasn't a certainty at Tennessee.
