According to a report by Tom Pelissero, the Tennessee Titans are planning to hire Washington Commanders defensive backs coach Chris Harris as the team's next defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach.
Harris was a sixth-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2005 NFL Draft and spent eight seasons in the NFL. Over his career, Harris had 16 interceptions, 14 forced fumbles, and earned second-team All-Pro honors with the Bears in 2010.
After six years of coaching around the league, Harris landed the job as the Commanders' defensive backs coach in 2020, and thrived immediately. In 2020, Harris' group allowed 3,068 net passing yards, Washington's fewest since 2004. In 2022, Washington was once again near the top of the league in pass defense. Opponents averaged just 191.3 pass yards per game against the Commanders this past season.
Bringing in Harris, who has demonstrated recent success at leading a dominant pass defense, is exactly what the Titans need.
Tennessee allowed 274.8 passing yards per game in 2022. That was the worst passing defense in the NFL by a large margin. The Titans' gave up too many explosive plays over their heads, and opposing quarterbacks knew to pick on Tennessee's inexperienced defensive backs.
The Titans' lack of improvement against the pass during the course of the season led to the team firing defensive backs coach Anthony Midget after the season concluded. Now they hope to convert on Harris as his replacement, who is still highly sought after in coaching conversations around the league, with the added title of "defensive passing game coordinator" as they turn over the keys to the pass defense.
