The Tennessee Vols were eliminated from the College World Series on Tuesday night by the LSU Tigers.
Vols right handed pitcher Drew Beam started the game for Tennessee and he pitched well enough to win.
The sophomore pitched 5.2 innings against the Tigers, giving up just six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out nine LSU batters.
Tennessee's offense, however, could never generate any run support for Beam.
After the game, LSU outfielder Dylan Crews, a player who could be the No. 1 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft later this summer, was asked about facing Beam.
Crews told reporters that he thinks Beam will have a lengthy career at the next level.
"It was a great pitcher on the mound today," said Crews about Beam. "He's going to be a big leaguer for a long time, I believe, in the future."
LSU head coach Jay Johnson echoed Crews' sentiments when discussing Beam and the Vols' pitching staff.
"We did just enough in my opinion one of the two best pitching staffs in college baseball," said Johnson on Tuesday night. "To beat them four times this year is a great accomplishment for us because the respect that I have for Tony (Vitello) and how well they recruit and the Tennessee program."
"When you run into this park, with the wind blowing in, shadows, and then Drew Beam, you heard the best hitter in baseball call him a Major Leaguer, and that staff we saw last night…it's not going to be easy," added Johnson
It's clear that LSU has a lot of respect for Tennessee baseball. And while that won't make the loss sting any less for Vols fans, it's a reminder that LSU and the rest of the SEC aren't expecting Vols baseball to go away anytime soon.
Tony Vitello gave Josh Heupel a must-hear compliment that no one saw coming
Before Tennessee Vols football coach Josh Heupel got into coaching, he was a star football player at Oklahoma. Heupel was the runner-up in Heisman Trophy voting in 2000 and led the Sooners to a BCS Championship. Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello was actually at the Big 12 Championship game in 2000 when the Sooners beat […]
