The Tennessee Vols will begin spring practice on March 20, which is less than two weeks away.

When spring practice starts, the book on the 2022 Vols will be closed and the story of the 2023 Vols will begin.

While we don't yet know how the story will go, we know that quarterback Joe Milton will be the main character….at least we're pretty sure he will be.

247Sports recently named a "burning question" for each SEC team during spring practice.

And their "burning question" for Tennessee revolved around the quarterback position.

"Is Joe Milton the guy?" asked 247Sports' Chris Hummer.

From 247Sports: Can Milton, who has twice been replaced as a starter in his career, find a renaissance in his fifth season of college football? It’s one of the most fascinating stories of the college football season. If Milton is good, the Vols are going to score. A lot. The other layer to this story is the status of Tennessee five-star true freshman Nico Iamaleava, the No. 2 overall player in the 2023 class. Iamaleava probably sits and learns behind Milton for a year in an ideal world. But what if Tennessee needs him? What if he’s so good that he shoves Milton to the side? Those elements make Tennessee’s offseason QB situation so fascinating.

I don't see this as that big of a question.

Milton isn't the same quarterback that he was at Michigan. He's not even the same quarterback that he was in early 2021 when he started the first two games of the Josh Heupel era.

The Florida native continued to work while sitting behind Hendon Hooker for the majority of the last two seasons. And in limited action, we saw the vast improvements Milton has made as a quarterback. He played as well as anyone could've hoped in the Vols' win against Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

There are some things Milton needs to clean up — he needs to be better at improvising when a play breaks down — but he showed more than enough in his chances this past season to inspire confidence that he can lead Tennessee to another special season.

I'll agree with Hummer that Nico Iamaleava's presence adds some intrigue to this question.

For now, there's no question that this is Milton's team. But Iamaleava has the upside to be the best quarterback in program history. I'm not putting those expectations on him, but he has that kind of talent if everything goes smoothly for him at Tennessee.

At what point will Heupel feel that Iamaleava is ready? And when he gets to that point, will Heupel hand the offense over to Nico?

I think that's the most interesting question to watch this season. But for spring practice, there's no question that Milton is the guy. And he'll get plenty of chances to further confirm that he's the guy.
