NFL.com recently named the "ideal top two picks" for each team in the 2022 NFL Draft.
And I think they might have missed the mark with the Tennessee Titans.
NFL.com's Chad Reuter thinks the Titans should take North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell with the No. 26 overall pick and Minnesota offensive lineman Daniel Faalele with the No. 90 overall pick (third round).
Howell's ability to make plays from — and outside — the pocket might push the Titans, who have Ryan Tannehill entrenched as their starter, to follow the example set by teams that have drafted a first-round QB despite the presence of a veteran (see: the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes and Alex Smith in 2017, the Packers with Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers in 2020 and the Niners with Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo last year). Faalele's 6-foot-8, 384-pound build could entice another team before the Titans (whose second-rounder went to Atlanta in last year's Julio Jones trade) make their next selection, in Round 3, but he would really fit well with the desire to create huge runways for Derrick Henry in the run game.

I'm not totally opposed to the idea of the Titans taking a quarterback in the draft.
I just don't think they should take a quarterback in the first round.
First-round picks are too valuable. The Titans need to make sure they draft a player who can have an immediate impact. Maybe Howell will end up being a Pro-Bowl caliber quarterback. It's certainly possible. But it's far from a sure thing.
This year's quarterback draft class isn't strong. In most years, Howell would be a second-round or third-round selection.
I can see a quarterback-needy team reaching for Howell in the first round, but I can't see the Titans reaching.
Tennessee needs to keep an eye on their team needs, but the smartest thing to do at No. 26 is to take the best player available (and that won't be Howell). I'm sure that's the approach that Titans general manager Jon Robinson will be taking.
As for the third-round selection of Faalele?
I think that's a fine third-round selection. In the third round, teams are typically going with a best player available approach, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Titans select an offensive lineman.
