The Tennessee Vols are locked into a battle with the Michigan Wolverines for 2024 four-star athlete Boo Carter.
Carter, 5-foot-10/184 lbs from Chattanooga, TN, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 17 athlete in the nation and the No. 2 player in the state of Tennessee.
The coveted recruit, who recently visited Michigan, was on Tennessee's campus on Wednesday, just a few days ahead of his planned commitment on June 17 (which will take place in Manhattan).
Most folks expect the Vols to be the pick for Carter, but Michigan has given the Tennessee native plenty to think about — including a unique recruiting pitch.
Carter can play on either side of the ball, but he would make more sense for the Vols as a defensive back.
Michigan, however, is pitching Carter on being a Jabrill Peppers-type player.
Peppers, if you don't recall, played on both sides of the ball for the Wolverines. He also returned kicks/punts. Peppers was a first-round selection by the Cleveland Browns in the 2017 NFL Draft.
From Rivals.com: Tennessee might be too far ahead – or maybe not – because Carter loved his visit to Michigan this past weekend and the coaches told him he could be the next Jabrill Peppers in Ann Arbor. The Chattanooga (Tenn.) Brainerd standout also hit it off with Jacob Oden, Bryce West and others on the visit and loved how the staff treated his family. The Vols are definitely up there but Michigan made its move, although Carter had set his commitment date prior to the trip, which could be telling.
I wouldn't be totally shocked if Carter committed to Michigan, but it doesn't feel like it's trending that way. I still think it'll be the Vols for Carter — the location factor is likely too much for Michigan to overcome.
Tennessee currently has 11 players committed to their 2024 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 15 in the nation.
