Tennessee 2024 4-star QB Jake Merklinger receives compliment that suggests he's a great fit for Vols

When you hear a discussion about Tennessee Vols quarterbacks, it likely centers on two names — Nico Iamaleava and George MacIntyre.
Iamaleava is the former five-star recruit who will start for the Vols this fall, while MacIntyre is a 2025 five-star recruit who committed to Tennessee last month.
The forgotten name in some of those discussions is Jake Merklinger, the four-star quarterback who signed with the Vols as part of the program's 2024 recruiting class.
Merklinger, 6-foot-3/205 lbs from Savannah, GA, will serve as Tennessee's backup quarterback in 2024 as a true freshman.
And a compliment he received from On3 this week shows why he's a great fit for the Vols' offense.
Merklinger, who was rated as the No. 11 quarterback in the nation, was named by On3 as the "most efficient" quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class.
From On3: Other prospects may be more impressive from an arm talent and athletic perspective, but few operate a high school offense in a more efficient manner than Jake Merklinger. The Tennessee signee has a very good feel for the game and is able to throw with accuracy and timing for chunk yardage. He didn’t throw a ton of passes at Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day relative to his peers, but was deadly when he did – completing 72.1% of his passes for 3,028 yards and 38 touchdowns against just two interceptions. His 13.4 yards per attempt and passer rating of 238.4 is among the best in the cycle.
Accuracy, timing, efficiency, and the ability to throw for chunk yardage. Those are all necessary traits for a quarterback to thrive in Josh Heupel's up-tempo offense.
Merklinger is going to play within his abilities. He's not going to try to force plays that aren't there.
The Vols obviously hope they don't need Merklinger to play meaningful snaps in 2024, but if he's forced into action, Tennessee will be getting reps from a quarterback that knows how to take care of the ball while showing accuracy and efficiency.
