Tennessee Vols right handed pitcher Chase Dollander is expected to be a first-round selection in the 2023 MLB Draft that gets underway on Sunday evening.
Dollander, who started his career at Georgia Southern, had a "down" 2023 season, finishing the year with a 4.75 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.
Despite the down season, the 2022 SEC pitcher of the year is still coveted by MLB teams.
The Athletic's Keith Law, perhaps the most respected MLB draft expert in the business, reveled his final 2023 MLB mock draft on Friday. And he has Dollander going to the Arizona Diamondbacks with the No. 12 overall selection.
From The Athletic: The D-Backs were heavy on Dollander down the stretch, hoping they’re getting a top-five talent who had an off year because some genius told him to change his slider grip to get more sweep. I’ve also heard them with Houck, Shaw, Troy and Gonzalez, who might have a floor here.
Dollander has the stuff to be a dependable starting pitcher in the big leagues. The down season won't deter teams too much as they'll adjust Dollander's mechanics/pitch grips to maximize his potential.
