The Tennessee Vols have plenty of firepower returning on the diamond for next season. Many of their top power hitters will depart for the MLB, but they have some talent waiting in the wings. You can never have too much of it in college baseball, though, especially in the SEC. The transfer portal will be another key piece of their off-season. That's becoming the norm for many programs. Zane Denton, senior transfer third baseman from Alabama, should be on their radar.
Zane Denton, Third Baseman, Alabama Crimson Tide
Denton is a very well-balanced infielder. He led the Crimson Tide in home runs and RBI this season as a junior. On defense, he sported a .971 fielding percentage, committing just four errors at the hot corner all season.
Crimson Tide head coach Brad Bohannon had some gleaming comments about Denton.
"He’s just one of those guys that’s got the hitting gene – that is just a pure hitter… He’s done a really good job of developing his body here, developing some athleticism and becoming a much better defensive player. He’s also grown as a person and achieved success at a high level in the classroom, which we as a staff are proud of."
Denton has been durable as well. He started all 58 games for Alabama this past season. The senior 3B fits a need for the Vols as they will be looking for multiple starters to fill the void of guys that will enter the MLB Draft. Vols star third baseman Trey Lipscomb has a good chance to enter the draft. Accordingly, adding a veteran, proven 3B in the SEC makes plenty of sense. Denton has somewhat flown under the radar on a middling Alabama team in the SEC. His talent is undeniable, though.
It is basically impossible to replace the production of Lipscomb with a sole player, but Denton has shown he can perform under the bright lights. The biggest stage is not too big for him. Not to mention, the Vols have already addressed shortstop. Former Kansas Jayhawks star SS Maui Ahuna will head to Rocky Top next season.
Transfers within the SEC have already been more popular during this transfer cycle. Adding Denton would be a smart move for the Vols.
