The Tennessee Volunteers are always an energetic group on the diamond. For the past three years, they've shown emotion and used that emotion to propel them to many victories. This season, the group is mature – but electric. That can be dangerous if you catch fire in the Men's College World Series. It looks like the Vols could be catching their stride after a massive win over the Stanford Cardinal to eliminate them from the tournament on Monday afternoon.
Relief pitcher Chase Burns was the key catalyst in the win, throwing six scoreless innings to follow up Chase Dollander. The offense did their job with some timely knocks, and the Vols live to fight another day in Omaha. After the win, Burns had some comments that made him sound like a veteran leader for this Vols group.
One statement stood out from the Tennessee fireballer when asked about the difficulty for Stanford in facing him for the first time this season.
I don’t know if they have a pitcher in their conference that’s kind of like me. They were putting good swings on my fastball — and slider, too. So I used all my pitches today to get ahead in the count and did the job. — Burns via Volquest
Burns is absolutely right. There's no pitcher in the PAC-12 with his pitch mix when he's locked in. Locked in may be an understatement for what he's doing so far in the postseason. If he continues this individual run, the Vols will be very difficult to beat for anyone in the country over the next week.
