One of the Tennessee Vols' most underrated players showed off his explosiveness in an off-season training video this week.
Senior running back Jabari Small didn't receive much attention — at least nationally — last season due to wide receiver Jalin Hyatt and quarterback Hendon Hooker dominating most of the Tennessee-related headlines.
Small, however, had an incredibly impressive season. The Memphis native finished the 2022 season with 840 total yards and 15 total touchdowns (13 rushing and two receiving). Small put up those numbers despite splitting time in Tennessee's backfield with Jaylen Wright and Dylan Sampson (Small's 13 rushing touchdowns are tied for the sixth-most in a single season by a Vols running back).
The senior running back will face competition in 2023 once again from Wright and Sampson (true freshman Cam Seldon could also be a factor). And while Wright and Sampson probably have more upside than Small, the Vols' lead back from this past season is training this offseason like he expects to be the starter.
Brad Lester, a running backs coach that works with various players throughout the nation, posted a video this week that shows a clip of Small's offseason training. And the Tennessee running back looks very explosive.
The wide receivers and the quarterbacks at Tennessee get all of the attention, but it's the running backs (and the offensive line, of course) that really makes the offense work. Teams have to respect Tennessee's three-headed monster at running back, which opens up the passing game.
Small was a huge part of the Vols' offensive success last season. And he looks ready to serve in a key role again for Tennessee in 2023.
