Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel has a unique connection to a 2023 star four-star offensive lineman that could help UT land the talented recruit.
Lucas Simmons, 6-foot-7/300 lbs from Clearwater, FL (by way of Sweden), is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 18 offensive lineman in the country and the No. 33 player in the state of Florida.
Simmons took a visit to Tennessee this past weekend, joining recruits like five-star quarterback (and Vols commit) Nico Iamaleava and five-star wide receiver Carnell Tate on Rocky Top.
After the visit, Simmons spoke to VolQuest about his recruitment. And he mentioned that Heupel and his dad share an Oklahoma Sooners connection (both played at OU in the late 90s).
“It was great catching up with him (Heupel)," said Simmons. "We face timed my dad when I was talking to him."
“To be able to talk to these guys that I have a connection with, without even knowing, is something that stands out so much to me," added Simmons. "I really liked talking to coach Heupel and the coaching staff for sure.”
Tennessee has plenty of competition for Simmons. The Florida Gators are one of the programs the Vols are battling for the talented offensive lineman.
The connection between Heupel and the Simmons family, though, could propel Tennessee to the front of this recruiting battle.
