The 2024 SEC schedule was revealed last week (dates haven't been announced yet) and there are some fun matchups set to be played.
One of those matchups includes the Tennessee Vols in what ESPN says is a must-see game.
ESPN recently named the four games in 2024 that fans are most excited to see and they included Tennessee's matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners (which will be played in Norman).
From ESPN: In just two years, Josh Heupel has Tennessee's program nationally relevant again. The Vols' trip to Norman has a few different storylines. Brent Venables will be in his third season as Oklahoma's head coach, and the Sooners' fans will be expecting a breakthrough by then similar to what Tennessee accomplished in Heupel's second season. Moreover, Heupel will be returning to his alma mater, where he was a Heisman Trophy finalist. But that doesn't necessarily mean Heupel has warm and fuzzy feelings about his alma mater after being fired as offensive coordinator by former coach Bob Stoops following the 2015 season.
That should be one of the most hyped games of the 2024 season. And it's mostly because of Josh Heupel's history with Oklahoma (note: Heupel was actually let go by Bob Stoops at Oklahoma after the 2014 season, not after the 2015 season as ESPN said).
Heupel famously led the Sooners to a national championship in 2000 and he was an assistant at his alma mater until he was replaced by Lincoln Riley ahead of the 2015 season. Heupel has maintained relationships with many of his former Oklahoma teammates, but he hasn't had much of a relationship with OU since getting fired by Stoops.
It'll certainly be interesting to see what kind of reception Heupel receives when the Vols return to Norman in 2024 (UT last played in Norman in 2014, a 34-10 loss). It'll also be interesting to see how Heupel handles the extra media attention that's certain to follow him the week that Tennessee plays Oklahoma.
How one play this season showed that Vols head coach Josh Heupel has the best offensive mind in college football
Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel has established himself as one of the best offensive minds in college football in recent years. Under Heupel's leadership, the Vols have gone from having the No. 109 offense in the nation in 2020 (under Jeremy Pruitt) to the No. 7 offense in 2021 and the No. 1 offense […]
