The Tennessee Titans made a huge addition to their roster ahead of training camp by signing superstar wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
Hopkins, a former Clemson standout who has reached five Pro Bowls, is widely regarded as one of the best route runners in the NFL. He also has some of the best hands in the league.
The addition of Hopkins will give the Titans' maligned offense a much-needed boost.
There are several reasons why Hopkins opted for the Titans over the other franchises that were interested in signing the coveted wide receiver. Hopkins' familiarity with Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel, who was an assistant with the Houston Texans for four seasons while Hopkins was with the team, certainly helped the Titans' case.
Titans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly was also in Houston with Hopkins.
Familiarity with those coaches, however, isn't the only reason why Hopkins signed with the Titans. One of the biggest reasons why Hopkins landed in Nashville is because of former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs.
Dobbs spent the final month of the 2022 season with the Titans. The former Tennessee standout started the Titans' final two games of the season. While the Titans lost both of those games, Dobbs, who had never started a regular season game in the NFL before, played well enough to give Vrabel's squad a chance.
Hopkins saw the potential of the Titans' offense with Dobbs under center.
"I think last year when Josh (Dobbs) came in and those guys were very close to, you know, still winning," said Hopkins. "That right there kind of woke my eyes up to that they're only a couple of pieces away from where they want to be."
If Dobbs plays terribly in those starts and the Titans get blown out, does Hopkins still end up in Nashville?
That's obviously impossible to know, but there's no doubt that Dobbs helped the Titans in their pursuit of a playmaker that they badly needed on their roster.
And the ironic part is that Dobbs won't be teammates with Hopkins in Nashville after the former Vol signed with the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason.
Of course, it's always possible that Dobbs could end up back with the Titans at some point. After all, Dobbs started the 2022 season in Cleveland before finishing the season with the Titans.
