2024 four-star wide receiver Amari Jefferson is set to announce his commitment on August 5. His final three schools are Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.
Jefferson, 6-foot/200 lbs from Chattanooga, TN, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 16 athlete in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Tennessee. He's also rated as the No. 209 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class.
The Tennessee native has been committed to the Vols for baseball for a while, but that commitment isn't considered a big factor in this recruiting battle — though Jefferson could play both sports in college.
If Jefferson truly plans to play baseball as well as football — lots of players plan to be two-sport athletes in college, but very few actually do — then Tennessee would be his best option. Alabama's baseball program is a bit of disarray after a gambling scandal surfaced this past season.
Tennessee, meanwhile, is coming off a College World Series appearance in Omaha (Georgia's baseball program hasn't been to the College World Series since 2008).
The fact that Jefferson is from Tennessee could also give the Vols a slight edge in this battle.
“Tennessee is the home-state school and it would be close to home," said Jefferson to On3 recently. "I like the staff a lot, their offense stands out and I would have great support staying in state.”
Landing Jefferson isn't a "must" for the Vols — Tennessee's had no issues developing wide receivers under Josh Heupel — but it would be a huge recruiting win for UT just because it would mean winning a head to head recruiting battle against Georgia and Alabama.
