Most college football analysts agree that the Tennessee Vols likely aren't unseating the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC East in 2022.

The talent gap is simply too big. Georgia has depth — especially on the defensive side of the ball — that the Vols just don't have.

Tennessee is on an upward trajectory under head coach Josh Heupel. And I think they'll be a legitimate threat to Georgia in the next couple of years. They just probably aren't going to be a big threat to the Bulldogs this season.

UT's players, however, don't agree. They aren't taking the field this fall with the goal of finishing second in the SEC East. The Vols want to take the SEC East and compete for a national championship according to redshirt senior tight end Princeton Fant.

"It's definitely a change of culture (under Vols head coach Josh Heupel)," said Fant this week. "Just guys wanting to be here. Guys wanting to come in and compete, play ball, get better. All of us together as a team, we're pushing each other to be the best and compete for a national championship this year."

The Vols likely aren't winning a natty this year, despite Fant and his teammates' goal. There's just too much work that needs to be done before the program is in that position (depth and talent).

But competing for a national championship should always be the goal at Tennessee. Vol fans should be happy to see that a championship-winning mindset is present under Heupel and this Tennessee coaching staff.
