Herring, 6-foot-5/206 lbs from Murfreesboro, TN (Riverdale), is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 6 edge rusher in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Tennessee. He's also rated as the No. 50 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

The Vols' latest commit appeared on 104.5 The Zone's The Buck Reising Show on Wednesday, along with his football coach at Riverdale, Will Kriesky, to discuss his commitment to Tennessee and how UT plans to use him.

"Caleb is long and he's learning how to use his body," explained Kriesky. "He's a technician — he wants to do the little things the right way. He works really, really hard at his position to be the top at his spot."

Herring told Reising that Tennessee envisions him playing the same role in Knoxville as current Vol Byron Young, who led the Vols in sacks last year with 5.5 (along with linebacker Jeremy Banks, who also totaled 5.5 sacks).

"My position is going to be the LEO, what Byron Young is playing," said Herring. "Moving around on the defense, rushing the quarterback. Playing three down, four down, and [in] a two-point stance. Dropping back some. What Byron Young is doing."

Tennessee essentially wants Herring to be a disruptive force on the defensive side of the ball. He certainly has the length. The talented recruit just needs to add some weight, which shouldn't be a problem once Herring arrives on campus and gets in the Vols' strength and conditioning program.

UT currently has the No. 8 recruiting class in the nation. And they're nowhere close to being done. Herring told VolQuest this week that he has several recruits that have promised to follow him to Tennessee.

It's an exciting time to be a Vols fan.
