The Tennessee Titans (5-2) played their brand of football on Sunday, defeating the Houston Texans (1-5-1) by the score of 17-10.
The Titans have leaned on running the football and playing good defense ever since Mike Vrabel was hired as head coach in 2018. And that’s exactly how they snuck out of Houston with their fifth win of the season.
Everybody will talk about Derrick Henry’s record-setting day, and they should. Rushing for 219 yards and two touchdowns is nothing to sneeze at.
That being said, this defense is constantly being overlooked. The Titans lay claim to one of the league’s toughest defenses against the run and nobody outside of Nashville will talk about it.
After bottling up Texans running back Dameon Pierce and holding Houston to just 43 yards rushing on the day, the Titans run defense now ranks third in the NFL allowing 89.1 rush yards per game.
The Titans were winning in the trenches on a consistent basis. Tennessee tallied three sacks on Texans quarterback David Mills, adding five tackles for a loss to go along with them.
By dominating the ground game on both sides of the ball the Titans make for a difficult matchup for the powers that be in the AFC. Tennessee has won playing this style of football for the past five years, and I wouldn’t expect that to change any time soon.
