Tennessee Titans wide receiver AJ Brown caused a stir on Monday by not reporting to the first day of voluntary offseason workouts.

Brown is looking for a new contract and this is simply a tool he's using to get an extension done sooner. It's an extremely common tactic that's been used by many NFL players, including Titans offensive lineman Taylor Lewan in 2018 (running back Derrick Henry likely would've done something similar in 2020, but offseason workouts were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

Some fans were upset with Brown's decision to skip the workouts that started this week (that seems to be a small number of fans, as most social media comments I've seen have been supportive of Brown).

Brown responded to those comments on Monday via a Tweet.

Later on Monday, Titans defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons appeared to respond to the criticism directed toward Brown.

Simmons clearly has his teammate's back, which means there's no "locker room controversy" surrounding Brown's decision to skip the workouts (something that isn't considered a holdout since he's not skipping something that's mandatory).

A deal between Brown and the Titans is likely going to get done sooner than later. Both sides are motivated to get an extension done. When it eventually gets done, the missed workouts in April will be a distant memory.

Titans players like Simmons don't have an issue with Brown's approach. Fans shouldn't have an issue, either. It's just business.
