Tennessee Titans quarterback Josh Dobbs was one of the few bright spots of the Titans' season finale in Jacksonville. In his second start with the team, Dobbs was poised, fearless, and usually decisive from the pocket.
He was not without mistake, though.
Dobbs performance on Saturday night was overshadowed by a few mistakes that contributed to Tennessee's loss in Jacksonville, and Dobbs is already regretting his final play of the season.
On 4th and 13 with less than two minutes to go in the game and the Titans driving for the win, Dobbs threw a checkdown to Hassan Haskins, who was tackled short of the line to gain, ultimately ending the game. It was a rare mental lapse by Dobbs, who had nothing to lose by scrambling or giving a wide receiver a chance to make a play down the field. Maybe even draw a penalty.
Dobbs immediately wished he could take that throw back.
On the most recent episode of the Bussin' With The Boys podcast, Dobbs spoke with former Titans LB Will Compton and current Titans teammate Taylor Lewan about the final play of the season.
Compton put Dobbs into a "hypothetical" situation, reliving that moment in Jacksonville, asking him where he would go with the football in that scenario.
"Probably should throw it past the sticks," Dobbs said with a smile. "I was so hot at myself. Hindsight is 20/20, you know I’ll put it on me, it’s straight."
Dobbs would then explain his understanding of the coverage the Jaguars showed him and the process that went on in his mind as the play progressed.
"I knew what coverage they were in, it's called 3 weak blast. They’re standing right at the sticks, and standing right where the guys were running. I was like 'Alright, I’m gonna stare at the guy over the ball, I’m gonna try to pull as many people as I can to him, and try to rip it to Treylon into the boundary,'" Dobbs explained. "So I caught it, Nick Westbrook runs a change route, and there’s like 4 guys standing right there. And then I look right and there’s two guys standing right next to Treylon. Like Treylon and the corner are touching shoulders. Then (Robert Woods), like the safety is standing in front of him. So I’m like 'the worst thing I can do right now is take a sack'. And then as I was saying that, I was about to start scrambling. It was out of reaction, Hassan (Haskins) just flashed right in front of my face, and I threw it. And right when I threw it I was like 'come back.'"
While that play may not be the most fond memory Dobbs has in a Titans uniform, he certainly has nothing to hang his head about. Dobbs finished the night 20/29 with 179 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Not bad for a guy who was signed to the active roster just 17 days prior.
As usual, Dobbs was a class act in his time in Tennessee. He demonstrated humility and a firm understanding of the concepts put in front of him, and was an exceptional presence to have around in the locker room.
It would be in the Titans' best interest to find a way to bring him back into the QB room next season.
