The Tennessee Titans are facing a familiar problem with the latest news in free agency.
Josh Dobbs, who started two games for the Titans in 2022, has found a new home with an AFC foe. According to Dobbs’ agent Mike McCartney, the former University of Tennessee standout has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns.
Dobbs opened the 2022 season on the Browns’ roster, but was waived in late-November after starting QB Deshaun Watson made his return from a suspension. Dobbs was then signed to the Detroit Lions practice squad before the Titans plucked him up on December 21.
Dobbs went 0-2 in his two starts with the Titans, passing for 411 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He earned some respect amongst the fanbase for outperforming expectations by making his first career start just eight days after being signed.
With Dobbs now out of the equation, the Titans’ will likely turn to free agency, or possibly even the draft, to find a third quarterback. Ryan Tannehill and Malik Willis are the only two signal callers currently under contract for the 2023 season.
Willis struggled in his rookie campaign after the Titans took a third-round flyer on him last April. He went 1-2 in three starts completing just 50.8% percent of his passes. Willis threw for 276 yards and three interceptions, though he did add 123 rushing yards and a touchdown on 28 attempts.
It quickly became evident that Willis was not quite ready for the NFL game. While he continues to develop, the Titans will be on the prowl for another quarterback capable of giving Willis competition for the backup role in 2023.
