It’s no secret that the supporting cast around Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill leaves something to be desired and needs to be improve greatly in 2023.
Last season, there were times when Tannehill was throwing to a combination of Robert Woods, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and Chris Conley as his primary receiving options with one of the worst pass blocking offensive lines in football protecting him.
After Taylor Lewan went down and Dennis Daley stepped in to replace him at left tackle, the Titans offensive line was a mess. As result, Tannehill was sacked 33 times in 12 games and finished the season on Injured Reserve.
Even from the outside looking in, it seemed like Tannehill needed more help around him in order for the Titans to succeed, and now there’s more evidence to prove it.
These graphs show how often NFL quarterbacks threw to open receivers and their accuracy on those throws during the 2022 season. Tannehill had the second lowest percentage of throws to open receivers last season, but was top five in accuracy throws on those snaps.
When you really understand what Tannehill has had to work with, it becomes evident that he is far from the problem in Tennessee. As shown in the graphics, Tannehill is the 6th most accurate quarterback when throwing to open receivers since the start of 2017. Philip Rivers, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees, all of whom are retired, are three of the names ahead of him.
If Tannehill were to be given targets that get open and create seperation, it's safe to say he'd have a lot of success. That's what he used to have in A.J. Brown and has since lost. Treylon Burks (50th) was the only Titans player last season to be ranked in the top 50 receivers and tight ends in average seperation in 2022.
These metrics are a big reason why I believe signing DeAndre Hopkins is even more important than is being discussed. Inserting Hopkins into a Titans offense that has Burks, Chig Okonkwo, and Kyle Philips running routes with Derrick Henry in the backfield is finally giving Tannehill the supporting cast he needs to thrive and lead the Titans back to the playoffs.
