It's safe to say that Todd Downing's time in Nashville did not end on the highest of notes. The former Pro Football Focus Quarterbacks Coach of the Year (2015) and tight ends coach turned offensive coordinator did not have success as a play caller with the Tennessee Titans.
Downing's offense was bottom three in yards per game and a bottom five unit in points per game in 2022. Combining the on-field struggles with his November arrest off the field, and the end of Downing's tenure with the Titans was an ugly one.
The Titans' former OC is landing on his feet, though. The New York Jets are bringing Downing aboard as their next passing game coordinator where he will partner up with former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett on the offensive staff.
Downing will also reunite with former Titans' offensive line coach Keith Carter, who was hired this offseason by New York as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator.
While his time with the Titans needed to come to an end, Downing still brings value to the Jets' staff. He is an experienced assistant that had success working directly with quarterbacks in Detroit, Buffalo, and Oakland. The role of passing game coordinator will allow him to get back to that strength.
Downing is not cut out for play calling, but this new gig in the Big Apple might be just what he needs.
