The MLB Draft is exciting for young high school and college prospects to get a chance to live out their dreams. To get selected, that's what they have hoped for since they were a kid, in many cases. For college baseball coaches, they're ecstatic to see their players and future players taken because it means they are doing something right. Additionally, they've developed a bond with those players.
On the flip-side, it is painful for college coaches to see high school commits for their school get selected early in the draft. It most likely means that player won't get to campus, choosing to go pro instead. Of course, that decision makes total sense. They're a teenager getting offered millions of dollars to potentially see the big leagues in due time. It minimizes risk that could occur in college due to injury.
For Tennessee Vols head coach Tony Vitello, night one of the 2023 MLB Draft went well for his incoming class of high school prospects.
The Vols were not one of the four SEC school with multiple commits selected on night one of the selections. Arkansas and Vanderbilt had four commits picked each. Aubrun and Ole Miss both had two selected on night one. It's very likely that none of those commits will play any collegiate ball at those schools.
According to Perfect Game, Tennessee currently holds the 14th-ranked recruiting class in the country for 2023. That rank may theoretically improve once the draft concludes, and many recruits sign to organizations. The Vols currently own the top-ranked recruiting class for the class of 2024.
