Death. Taxes. Drew Gilbert being clutch. This past weekend was yet another opportunity for the Tennessee Vols outfielder to come up huge for his team when they needed him most. He did exactly that with a home run to complete an exciting comeback against Campbell. Like Gilbert, Jauan Jennings used to do this often for the Tennessee Vols. Instead of on the diamond, those performances came on the gridiron for Jennings.
Gilbert isn't new to clutch postseason homers, though. That's what makes him special for the Vols and hated by other teams. He broke out nationally last season with his ninth inning, walk-off long ball to beat Wright State in an insane ballgame.
That dinger helped Tennessee stave off a tough Wright State squad and advance. This year's brought the Vols back from the dead against a feisty Campbell baseball team that gave eventual national champion Mississippi State all they could handle in regionals last year.
Vols fans know the legend of Jauan Jennings all too well. He is one of the most beloved athletes in school history. Jennings always gave his all for Tennessee, and he had some of the most memorable plays of this century for the Vols. No one will ever forget his performances against Georgia, Florida, or South Carolina.
Jennings was just the definition of a competitor.
Jennings and Gilbert share that trait. That's showing up more and more as Gilbert continues to make the most important plays when they mean the most just like Jennings did. Even when Gilbert doesn't have the best stats on the team by season's end, his clutch gene will be vital to the Vols completing what they want to this season. Winning a national championship.
