The Tennessee Vols finished the 2022 season as the No. 6 ranked team in the final AP Top 25 poll.
Thanks to some key losses from last year's squad — such as Hendon Hooker, Jalin Hyatt, and Darnell Wright (among others) — the Vols almost certainly won't be ranked that high in the preseason top 25.
Most analysts expect Tennessee to be ranked somewhere around No. 10.
Rivals.com's Blayne Gilmer, however, has a different view of the Vols in 2023.
Gilmer, who covers the Georgia Bulldogs for Rivals, predicted this past week that Tennessee will be ranked No. 18 in the initial preseason top 25 poll.
"One reason I don't have Tennessee ranked higher is because when Joe Milton has been a starter, he hasn't been able to hold onto the job," said Gilmer.
Former Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker, a third round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, made it clear earlier this year that Tennessee plays with a chip on their shoulder because of all the disrespect they receive.
Tennessee accomplished a lot last season — beating Florida, LSU, and Alabama all in the same season was massive for the program moving forward — but they obviously still have more to prove before the national media jumps on the big orange bandwagon.
Of course, I'm sure the Vols wouldn't have it any other way — this team under Josh Heupel thrives on proving folks wrong.
New angle of Vols WR Ramel Keyton’s TD against Clemson destroys false narrative about Tennessee’s offense
Tennessee Vols wide receiver Ramel Keyton had maybe the most casual 46-yard touchdown reception of all time in the Orange Bowl against the Clemson Tigers. Keyton caught a bomb from quarterback Joe Milton and just casually strolled into the end zone. You can't make it look any easier. Here's the sky cast view of the […]
