Tennessee is looking for some revenge after losing to Arkansas in Fayetteville last season. The Vols, however, will be facing a different Razorbacks coaching staff than they faced in 2024.
Arkansas fired head coach Sam Pittman late last month and promoted offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino to interim head coach.
Petrino then fired multiple members of the Razorbacks’ defensive coaching staff.
Because of those staff changes, the Vols aren’t sure what to expect defensively (or maybe even offensively at times) from Arkansas on Saturday.
“This is a unique situation, so you prepare for what’s on the tape, and you prepare for what potential unknowns could be as well,” said Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel on Monday of the staff changes at Arkansas. “But you also understand that it’s not going to be exact replicas of anything that you’ve seen on tape as well in this situation. So communication from staff and players will be really critical in this one.”
Bobby Petrino confirms speculation about his game plan against the Tennessee Vols
Petrino met with reporters on Monday to preview the matchup against the Vols and he not-so-subtly confirmed that he hopes to gain an advantage on Saturday because of the new looks Arkansas plans to throw at Tennessee.
“We’ve had a week of preparation and then we play Tennessee,” said Petrino when asked about moving players around after the coaching change. “So we’re not going to talk a lot about what we’re going to do with individuals and where they might line up in this first game, just to see if maybe we can get a little bit of an advantage there.”
Petrino knows that after Saturday, there won’t be many secrets about the Razorbacks in the post-Pittman era. Everything will be on film after the game against Tennessee.
But for this weekend’s matchup against the Vols, Arkansas will be able to surprise Tennessee with their game plan (at least for a little while on Saturday afternoon).
Tennessee will need to make quick adjustments to what they see early from Arkansas. Otherwise, this game could get uncomfortably close for the Vols.
