Former Tennessee Vols outfielder Drew Gilbert is one of the New York Mets' top prospects entering the 2024 season.

Gilbert will start the season in AAA with the Syracuse Mets, but he'll join the big league club for spring training Port St. Lucie this week. Joining him in Port St. Lucie will be another one of the Mets' top prospects — infielder Jett Williams, a first round selection by the Mets in the 2022 MLB Draft (Gilbert was a first round pick by the Houston Astros in the 2022 MLB Draft, he was traded to the Mets last summer).

Williams, who was drafted out of high school, has an existing relationship with Gilbert thanks to a Tennessee Vols recruiting trip several year ago.

"A funny thing, Drew was my host at Tennessee when I was on a recruiting trip my junior year of high school," said Williams on Friday. "So we kind of go a little bit back. I just got off the phone with him last night."

Williams ended up committing to Mississippi State, though ultimately, he chose a $3.9 million signing bonus with the Mets over playing college baseball.

By the way, Williams isn't the only Tennessee connection that Gilbert has in the Mets farm system. RHP Blade Tidwell, Gilbert's former teammate at Tennessee, is also a top prospect in the Mets' farm system.
