ESPN throws some under-the-radar shade at Tennessee that they probably thought no one would notice
The Tennessee Vols improved to 6-2 on Saturday via their 56-34 win over the Kentucky Wildcats
The Tennessee Vols are on the outside of ESPN’s College Football Playoff projections.
And that’s certainly more than fair.
Tennessee improved to 6-2 on Saturday, thanks to a 56-34 blowout win against the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Vols still have a path to the playoff — they essentially need to win out and finish the regular season at 10-2. But for now, there are several one-loss teams that are ahead of Tennessee in the playoff pecking order.
One of those teams is the Vanderbilt Commodores, which improved to 7-1 on Saturday with a win over the Missouri Tigers.
Vanderbilt is the No. 9 team in ESPN’s College Football Playoff rankings projection.
ESPN throws some under-the-radar shade at Tennessee while discussing the rest of Vanderbilt’s schedule
While discussing Vanderbilt’s chances of reaching the College Football Playoff, ESPN’s Heather Dinich suggested the Commodores’ toughest game the rest of the season is against the Texas Longhorns in Austin next weekend (the game kicks off at 11 AM local time).
“Saturday at Texas,” wrote Dinich of Vanderbilt’s toughest remaining game. “The Longhorns are desperately trying to keep their playoff hopes alive by avoiding a third loss, and ESPN Analytics gives them at least a 70% chance to win.”
Maybe that’s based on what the ESPN Analytics suggests (though that number means absolutely nothing), but I’m sure Tennessee would argue that the Commodores’ matchup against the Vols in Knoxville in the final week of the regular season is Vandy’s toughest remaining game. Especially since that game could be a play-in game for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what ESPN has to say about the toughest remaining game on Vanderbilt’s schedule. But that still felt like a jab at Tennessee from Dinich.
