CBS Sports had a take on Tennessee Vols redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava this week that UT fans should appreciate.
Iamaleava is set to serve as the Vols' starting quarterback in 2024 and CBS Sports thinks the former five-star recruit is the second year quarterback that will make the biggest leap this fall.
From CBS Sports: Iamaleava may have the biggest upside of any quarterback in the country at 6-foot-6, and 205-pounds with superb mobility. Nico got his feet wet last season in blowout wins and started the bowl game for the Vols, where he showed off his dynamic running ability and huge arm, torching a stingy Iowa defensive for three rushing scores and one passing. Under the watchful eye of Josh Heupel, don't be surprised if Iamaleava ends up as one of the best SEC quarterbacks by year's end. He won't leave Knoxville before finding his way to New York City for a Heisman ceremony.
Iamaleava edged out Oklahoma Sooners second year quarterback Jackson Arnold for the No. 1 spot on CBS Sports' list. Iamaleava and Arnold will go head-to-head in September when Tennessee travels to Norman to take on the Sooners.
There are certainly high expectations for Iamaleava as he takes over the Vols' offense in 2024, but he's well equipped to meet those high expectations. Iamaleava has all of the physical traits that a quarterback needs to be elite. He's also a tremendous teammate and a great leader. As long as he doesn't let the pressure get to him, Iamaleava should quickly develop into one of college football's biggest stars.
