Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback turned ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy revealed his updated top 25 rankings on Tuesday.
McElroy, who said last week that he doesn’t think Tennessee can reach the SEC Championship game, has the Vols ranked at No. 11 in his top 25.
The Vols are one spot behind the Georgia Bulldogs in McElroy’s rankings.
Greg McElroy explains his ranking of the Tennessee Vols
“At number 11, it’s Tennessee,” said McElroy while revealing his rankings. “Why are they behind Georgia? Because they lost to Georgia. Makes sense, right? Their best win is at Mississippi State, who’s currently 4-2. They lost to Georgia, and they’ll get Arkansas at home in an effort to continue their surge. They’ll play Alabama in a week. So plenty of opportunities here to improve Tennessee’s resumé in the weeks to come.”
Tennessee obviously has to take care of business this weekend against the Arkansas Razorbacks. If the Vols somehow lose that game (which I don’t think they will), their playoff hopes will take a massive hit.
The matchup against Alabama in two weeks is a game that will have a major impact on the Vols’ playoff chances. A win in Tuscaloosa would mean the Vols would likely need to go 1-1 against Oklahoma and Florida, while taking care of business in their other games, to reach the playoff for a second straight season.
A win for Tennessee against Alabama would also put the Crimson Tide’s playoff hopes on life support.
