Former Sooners head coach Bob Stoops reveals if he’ll be in Neyland Stadium for Oklahoma’s game against the Tennessee Vols
The Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners will meet in Neyland Stadium on Saturday night.
The Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners will face off on Saturday night in Neyland Stadium.
This matchup is essentially a College Football Playoff elimination game for both teams. Whichever team loses on Saturday night will have three losses, and it’s unlikely that a three loss team will be included in the 12-team College Football Playoff field.
While the College Football Playoff implications are the biggest storyline surrounding this game, there will still be plenty of attention on the Bob Stoops/Josh Heupel angle of this matchup.
Heupel, who led the Sooners to a national championship as the team’s starting quarterback in 2000, joined the Oklahoma staff as an assistant coach in 2006. He was eventually promoted to offensive coordinator before getting fired by Stoops following the 2014 season.
Over the last decade, Stoops and Heupel supposedly haven’t had much of a relationship.
Heupel returned to Norman last season as a competitor for the first time since getting fired by Stoops. The Vols took down the Sooners 25-15 in what amounted to a “revenge game” for Heupel.
Will Bob Stoops be in Knoxville for the Tennessee vs Oklahoma game?
Stoops was still the head coach at Oklahoma the last time the Sooners visited Knoxville (in 2015).
The former Oklahoma head coach, however, won’t be in Neyland Stadium on Saturday night for this year’s matchup between the two teams.
Stoops revealed during an appearance on KREF this week that he won’t be making the trip to Knoxville.
“I am not,” said Stoops when asked he was going to Tennessee for the game. “I am going to be on my back porch for the game. I’ll be good. I’ll be fine.”
That’s probably not a bad idea. I can’t imagine Stoops receiving a very warm welcome from the Big Orange faithful.
