A former Tennessee Vols assistant coach has reportedly been hired by the Penn State Nittany Lions.
According to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel, Penn State is hiring Stan Drayton as the program's new running backs coach.
Drayton, who mostly recently served as the head coach at Temple, was Tennessee's running backs coach during the 2008 season (which was Phillip Fulmer's final season as the head coach at UT).
Drayton has also spent time in the SEC as an assistant coach at Mississippi State and Florida. Additionally, he previously served as an assistant coach with the Chicago Bears and at Ohio State, among other coaching stops.
The Cleveland native left Florida to join Tennessee's coaching staff in early 2008 in part because he was frustrated with the involvement of the running backs in the Gators' offense.
"The offense we were running in Florida did not have much involvement with the running back," said Drayton in 2008. "There was some frustration there, I must be honest with you."
Drayton was only at Tennessee for one season. Lane Kiffin, who took over as the Vols' head coach after the 2008 season, hired Eddie Gran as Tennessee's running backs coach instead of retaining Drayton (Drayton landed at Syracuse for the 2009 season).
Drayton is replacing Ja’Juan Seider at Penn State. Seider left the Nittany Lions earlier this offseason to take the running backs coach job at Notre Dame.
