A former Tennessee Vols defender was named by On3 this week as one of the most valuable transfers at the Group of Five level.

On3 named the most valuable transfer into each conference, along with an "honorable mention" for each conference.

Former Vols linebacker Elijah Herring, who transferred to Memphis after leading Tennessee in tackles last season, was the honorable mention selection at the Group of Five level.

From On3: As a sophomore, Herring led the Vols in tackles (80) last season, and while he opted to transfer after not being promised a starting spot with the return of injured linebacker Kennan Pili, he figures to be a super valuable addition for the Tigers in 2024.

Memphis won the AAC in 2023 despite fielding a defense that ranked 11th in the conference in yards per play allowed (6.3). They were a middling run defense, too, so ideally Herring helps shore up one of the biggest holes on their team.

Herring filled a key role for the Vols last season after starting linebacker Keenan Pili went down with a season-ending injury in Tennessee's first game of the year.

But with Pili set to return in 2024, Herring was likely going to be buried on the Vols' depth chart.

The former Vol should get a chance to shine at Memphis where he'll receive more consistent playing time. There's no doubt that everyone in Tennessee's locker room will be rooting for Herring at Memphis. The junior linebacker is well-regarded as a teammate.
