Could a former Tennessee Vols standout be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys?
It's a long shot, but it's apparently a scenario that's on the table.
On Monday, the Cowboys parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy, paving the way for a new era to begin in Dallas.
Shortly after the news broke that the Cowboys and McCarthy had parted ways, the Forth Worth Star-Telegram's Nick Harris named former Vols tight end Jason Witten as a candidate to replace McCarthy in Dallas.
Witten, who played at Tennessee from 2000 to 2022, spent 16 of his 17 seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys (Witten's final season as a player was spent with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020).
Witten has been the head coach at Liberty Christian High School (located outside of Forth Worth) since 2021. The former Vol has never coached in the NFL.
After the 2023 season, Witten was named by the Cowboys as the Whataburger high school coach of the year.
Because he doesn't have any previous NFL or college coaching experience, Witten would be an unorthodox choice to take over as the Cowboys' new head coach. But with Dallas owner Jerry Jones running the show, no possibility, regardless of how farfetched it may be, can be ruled out.
