Former Tennessee Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt just had a very unusual week.

At least by his standards.

Normally guys who live and breathe football like Pruitt are completely engulfed with football this time of year — training camps, scrimmages, preseason games (in the NFL), team meetings, etc.

Pruitt, however, is taking this season off from coaching after spending last year as a defensive assistant with the New York Giants. He's likely waiting on the NCAA to hand out punishments (from the recruiting scandal that rocked Tennessee while Pruitt was the head coach) before making his next move.

As a result, Pruitt has some free time on his hands.

And with that free time, Pruitt made a trip to Cherokee, NC to take part in a World Series of Poker event.

Unfortunately for Pruitt, he didn't finish first in the event. But he still had a nice showing, finishing No. 23 with $2,964 in winnings (there were 63 players listed in the final results).

That's actually an impressive finish for a guy who doesn't play poker professionally. Football coaches don't have much time for anything other than football — especially college football coaches. So it's not like Pruitt has been spending years perfecting his poker strategies.

I'm sure this is a tough time of year for the former national championship-winning defensive coordinator. Pruitt isn't accustomed to not being part of a team just before the start of the season. Perhaps the trip to Cherokee was a way to get his mind off not being on the football field.
