‘I’ll admit, they’re pretty cool’ – Oklahoma QB John Mateer makes honest admission about playing Tennessee in Knoxville
The Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners will meet on Saturday night in Knoxville.
The Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners are set to meet in Knoxville on Saturday night.
Tennessee officially announced on Monday that the Vols will be going “dark mode” for the game against the Sooners, which should result in an electric environment in Neyland Stadium.
Oklahoma QB John Mateer makes honest admission about playing Tennessee in Knoxville
Oklahoma starting quarterback John Mateer met with reporters on Monday and he was asked for his thoughts on playing in front of a rowdy crowd in Knoxville.
The Washington State transfer quarterback said it’s going be “awesome” to play in Neyland Stadium before pointing out that Tennessee will be in their “cool jerseys”.
“No, I haven’t,” said Mateer when asked if he’s played in front a crowd as big as the one expected at Neyland Stadium. “But it’s gonna be awesome. They’re gonna be in their cool jerseys. And I’ll admit, they’re pretty cool jerseys. But it’s a night game and this is something that every kid dreams about playing in…it’s awesome.”
“I think just keeping your poise, you know, knowing that you got play to the game,” added Mateer when asked about the challenges of playing on the road in Knoxville. “You can’t get all caught up in how loud it is and the momentum swings because of the crowd. It’s still football. It’s 11 on 11.”
Mateer isn’t the first SEC opponent to admit they’re fans of Tennessee’s black uniforms.
Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Kearis Jackson admitted in 2022 that Tennessee’s dark mode uniforms “looked good”.
Tennessee should have some extra juice with this being a dark mode game, but it sounds like Oklahoma will be ready to match that energy.
