Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel spent some time with another famous Vol named Josh this past week in Knoxville.
Heupel attended the basketball game between Tennessee and Alabama last week and he ended up sitting beside former Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs.
Dobbs' dad, Robert, was also at the game and he had a funny quip for Heupel.
Heupel appeared on 104.5 The Zone's "Ramon, Kayla, and Will" on Monday and he discussed sitting beside Dobbs and his dad at the game.
Co-host Will Boling asked Heupel if Dobbs made any remarks about wishing he could've played in Heupel's offense at Tennessee.
While Heupel didn't reveal if Dobbs made any comments about the offense, he hilariously pointed out that Dobbs' dad mentioned it.
"I was sitting next to him and his dad courtside. His dad definitely was saying 'man I wish he had gotten an opportunity to play' in what we're doing offensively," said Heupel with a laugh.
"Josh is a dynamic player," added Heupel. "It's been fun to watch his NFL career unfold. I thought he played really well last year when he got an opportunity there with the Titans. Excited to see his future successes — wherever that is. But what a great ambassador for Tennessee, the university, and our football program. Really proud to have him be a VFL and represent us in a great way. Really appreciate the way he comes back and is intentional with our current players and creating a real bond with them and helping us grow as a program."
I'm sure there were some other conversations that happened aside from that one — which I'm betting were incredibly entertaining.
But unfortunately, those conversations will have to stay between Heupel and the Dobbs family.
Still, it's great to see the strong relationship between Dobbs and Heupel. Dobbs was one of the few bright spots during a down period for Tennessee football. Without Dobbs, parts of the last decade would've been unbearable for Vols fans.
So while it would've been fun to see Dobbs in Heupel's offense, I think most fans will agree that Dobbs was at Tennessee at just the right time. Because without him being in Knoxville from 2013 to 2016, who knows where the program would be today.
