Former Tennessee Vols defensive lineman Marlon Walls is feeling pretty good about UT football in 2025 after watching his alma mater take down the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville this past weekend.

Tennessee had to battle all game against the Bulldogs, but they eventually got the job done and left town with their fourth win of the season.

After watching the Vols get the win, Walls, who played at Tennessee from 2009 to 2013, said that he thinks Tennessee isn’t far off from the best team in college football.

Marlon Walls was encouraged by he saw from Tennessee against Mississippi State

“In my mind, our defense has been bend but don’t break this year,” said Walls on The Sports Source. “You’re gonna get drove down the field on and hold them to a field goal every once in a while. But when they got the strip sack fumble and the pick six, it’s like, alright, we can probably be a step better.

“When you’re looking at the different teams in college football, we ain’t that far off from the best one. Just being honest from what I’ve seen week to week. So that was a huge step for me to see the defense transition from bend don’t break to, like, we also can make plays, get sacks, and force fumbles.”

Tennessee’s defense scored two defensive touchdowns in the 41-34 win over Mississippi State. Those two defensive touchdowns kept the Vols in the game while the offense was trying to find its rhythm.

That’s what elite teams do. They play complementary football and they keep fighting even when things aren’t going to plan. Tennessee won that game in Starkville with grit, determination, and belief. And those are certainly ingredients that all of the best teams in the sport have.
