The Nico Iamaleava era is officially here for the Tennessee Vols.
Iamaleava, the No. 1 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class, is set to take over as the Volunteers' starting quarterback in 2024.
And Tennessee's players — newcomers and veterans — are excited about the former five-star recruit getting his shot to lead the Vols' offense.
UT senior defensive lineman Omari Thomas mentioned this week during an appearance on TPL Tennessee that Iamaleava is "chill" everywhere but on the field.
"He looked smooth, he looked real good," said Thomas when asked about Iamaleava's performance during a recent scrimmage. "He's young, but he's mature, though."
"He's real chill, laid back, he just does him," added Thomas. "But on the field, he's a problem. He's a problem, I'm telling you."
There's a bit of a misconception, especially among rival fan bases, that Nico is just a laid back California guy with a breezy attitude. And while that's true to an extent, it's also true that he's an elite competitor who badly wants to win and improve every day. When Nico's on the field — whether it's practice or a game, or even in the weight room — he's as competitive as anyone in the sport. That trait combined with his elite physical abilities is why players like Thomas are extremely excited to see Iamaleava lead the Vols' offense in 2024.
