Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava earned his first big win with the UCLA Bruins this past weekend.

Iamaleava and the Bruins beat Penn State 42-37 in a game that most folks expected to be a lopsided win for the Nittany Lions.

The win came less than a week after UCLA moved on from offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri.

Kirk Herbstreit thinks UCLA’s win over Penn State is a bigger deal than Appalachian State’s upset win over Michigan nearly 20 years ago

One of the greatest upsets in college football history happened in 2007 when Appalachian State shocked Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The Mountaineers’ 34-32 win over the Wolverines in 2007 was easily one of the most unexpected college football outcomes ever.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit thinks UCLA’s win over Penn State was a bigger upset than App State’s win over Michigan 18 years ago.

“I would put this up there — remember when Appalachian State beat Michigan? I think this is more of an upset than that,” said Herbstreit on his YouTube channel. “This is one of the all time [upsets].”

Some folks may disagree with Herbstreit’s comment, but that’s not the point. His comment shows what a monumental win this was for Iamaleava and the Bruins. UCLA hadn’t even held a lead in game this season, and yet they managed to knock off a program that many analysts predicted to win the national championship in 2025. That’s incredible.

As for whether or not it was bigger than App State’s win? Well, I don’t think it’s possible to answer that question. That was a completely different era of college football, before NIL and the transfer portal ruled the sport. Both games can be considered incredible upsets. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t have to rank everything in sports.
